A robot just read your resume. It took 0.4 seconds, it did not laugh at any of your jokes, and it already filed you somewhere. Here is how the screening actually works, and how to stop getting auto-rejected.
What an ATS actually does
You are not applying to a person. Not first, anyway. An applicant tracking system, or ATS, is the software that collects your application, pulls your resume into plain text, and files you under skills, work history, and education before a recruiter even opens the app. Recruiters then search that pile and rank candidates by match.
The system does not read like a human. It scans for the exact keywords and phrases the posting uses, and it depends on your file being structured so the text comes out clean. Both of those things are under your control. The robot is not out to get you. It is just very fast and very literal.
Why resumes get rejected
Missing keywords. The posting names a tool or skill you have, but it appears nowhere on your resume. The robot shrugs and lowers your score.
Unparseable formatting. Text trapped inside images, wild columns, and fancy graphics scramble the extraction order. The robot reads gibberish.
Headings it cannot find. If your section is called "Where I Have Worked" instead of "Experience", the parser files everything under miscellaneous.
Wrong file type. Some systems only index real text. A scanned PDF or an image never gets read at all. Straight to the pile.
How to prepare your resume
Use standard section headings: Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications.
Keep the layout simple and the text real. No text-in-image, no three-column chaos.
Mirror the exact tools and terms from the posting, but only where they genuinely describe you.
Put numbers in your bullets. "Increased sales" is nice. "Increased sales 23% in two quarters" gets read.
